Back Injury
Hi All,
Don't know if there is a better place for this thread? Please move if there is.
I'm still suffering from an injury I got deadlifting 8 months ago. I felt a sudden pain in my right lower back. I stopped an went home. 8 months on and I still have the same symptoms which are: Stiffness and pain in my lower back when leaning forward or after sitting or walking for a period of time Pain around my hip and down my leg to my lower quad (right side) Pain sometimes along my groin (right side) Lower Back spasms Very tense muscles in my lower back The main source of the pain is just above my right glute. I know this sounds like Sciatica (but these are the symptoms, I want to know the cause). What is causing the pressure of the sciatic nerve or is it something else causing the pain and problems? Discs, muscles, ligaments? I've seen a Chiropractor who has helped relieve some pain and tenseness, but hasn't given me a diagnosis. Nor has a doctor. I had X-rays taken yesterday and get the results next week - I don't believe they will show much and will hold out for an MRI.
If anyone has had anything similar or any suggestions as to what it might be or what I can do, I'd love to hear them.
Thanks. | | Reply » Back Injury |
sounds like you're going to need a long recovery period.
could be anything at this point, probably a disc bulging or worse.
have you been iceing it every night? if not, try it.
have you put heat on it? i mean, there are only so many things you can do, try them and see if it helps at all.
what is have your workouts been like, if any?

I'd go to a better doctor, not diagnosing it is bullshit.

MRI for the win, xrays wont show shit
has the chiro got you on a rehab program or are they just manipping you?
If I was to guess I would be saying L4/L5 posterolateral herniation protruding on L5 nerve root. Are you getting any weakness , numbness or mm wasting? But without doing a proper exam its just a guess
we can sit here and guess all day, but MRI should give you a definitive answer.

I stopped working out for around 3 months. There was a slight improvement from manipulation and rehab. Then I started working out again (probably a big mistake :-/ ) I stretch daily and use strengthening techniques.
I've not deadlifted since, but my squats have been fine. Strangly enough, overhead press and incline bench seem to aggravate more than anything (probably cos they compress my lower back). I don't seem to suffer any more or less after working out. I just thought I better stop to try and get it healed.
I know I need an MRI - but trying to get one on the NHS (i'm in the uk) isn't as easy as it sounds - I may go private.
No numbness. No muscle wasting - just spasms and pain. I've been using hotwater bottles & heat massagers.
Not sure if it gives any clues, but the injury occured pulling the weight up, just before straightening my legs. My guess is I used my back too much, rather than my legs for the first part of the movement.
I'm hoping for a muscle tear or ligament strain rather than a disc problem! What is the treatment for disc hernation? Surgery.
Thanks for the replies guys, anyone else got any thoughts?

well sounds like inked was on the mark.maybe just herniation of the disc.inwhich if not ruptured then some good steroidiol antiinflamatory meds and rest rehab should do it.if a rupture a would say maybe even still some good anti inflams and rest rehab could do the trick, but a discectomy maybe needed.not a huge deal pretty good recovery from that type of surgery.
