  "Diet" soda

 "Diet" soda

Hello guys / gals. This is my first post here, and I must say, the forum is VERY informative. My question is this; We all know of the claim that diet sodas make, such as no calories, sugars, fat, etc.. Are there any "hidden poisons" that would have the same effect on ones body like simple carbs and fats do? I have wondered this for some time. I like soda, but I consume between a gallon or two of water a day, and I keep diet soda consumption to a bare minimum. As for regular sodas, well I just don't drink them, that is unless it is a rum and coke, which is seldom. Thanks in advance for any info.

A couple a day won't kill you. There's a couple studies on long term effects(of aspartame) that show nothing, but I'm too lazy to find them.

Aspartame is said to have negative affects. But they are realatively minute. The concern I would have is all the carbination. I have read that drinking soda has the same affect on the lungs as 20+ years of smoking (only reversible as soon as you stop drinking). And I know I was drinking soda regularly this winter and had a hard time running until a week after I stopped when I magically took a minute off my 2mile time.

Interesting. I had never heard about any lung problems with regards to diet soda.

I drink diet soda (3-4 cans per day) but mostly water (1-2 gallons per day). From what I've heard, it's possible that something in it (either caffeine, citric acid, asparatame) could cause an insulin spike as if you taking in carbs. These claims are debatable.

Overall, I would say moderation is the key.

I never knew carbination would be bad for lungs. Would this make seltzer and beer just as bad?

The relationship between carbonation and lungs is new to me too. The main thing to remember is that for every 8 oz. of pop you drink, the body needs 32 oz. of water to re-hydrate itself. The diuretic action of pop makes it more problematic than beneficial. Stick with water, no fruit juices, and limit the pop.

A good rule: Everything in moderation.
