anxious for the answer as I have the same condition. My condition is a bit worse 'cause shortness of breath happens throughout the day....It's the worst at night prior to sleep. Any docs or experts out there...

here's an easy way to figure out whether you have sleep apnea or not... hmmm.. go to a sleep clinic and have them test you for it maybe?

prior to being tested for OSA (obstructive sleep apnea) you should be seen by an internist (internal medicine doctor or adult specialist) your blood pressure, kidney function, and thyroid function should be checked. also if you've gained quite a bit of size this has to be taken into consideration as well. anyone with a neck over 18 inches is a risk for OSA (mine's 20-been thru all of this) the daily SOB and waking up at night with SOB may be due to heart disease instead. you should probably consider an electrocardiogram (ECG/EKG) first(which can tell alot based on the tracing, i.e. pulmonary versus cardiovascular disease), followed by an echocardiogram of the heart(if indicated) to rule out LV (left ventricular) dysfunction and/or pulmonary hypertension (side-effect of OSA)

a key finding in OSA is hypersolmnolence or excessive sleepiness. if you are sitting in a chair in the middle of the day and fall asleep for no reason, there is a good chance you may have this. by no means am i trying to diagnose you with any disease, but it just so happens that i am an board certified internist with other certifications in hypertension and hosptial (critically ill ) medicine. hope this helps out.
