Had a NASTY muscle pull in my lower back on September of 05 doing squats that put me on my back unable to walk for about a week. Every since then I have been hesitant to do heavy squats for that reason. It was just a muscle pull and no slipped or blown discs. Am I less likely to have pulled muscles in my back if using a squat belt properly? |

A squat belt, worn properly offers protection not only to the spine but the abdomen

If I'm going to failure I use a belt. Other subfailure sets I don't as I want to make sure that my low back muscles are still stabilizing the weight to ensure they don't become weak. However, if you're also doing exercises like deads, SLD or good mornings...you could probably wear a belt during all your squating sets to give you peace of mind.

A belt will help you keep your back tight and straight, so it will help prevent such injuries.
Of course lower back work and ab work are important as well.
